Dan Monteroso might have had an inkling where the recruiting process would end coming out of an official visit to Purdue last weekend.
Head coach Darrell Hazell hosted the wide receiver from Saint Clairsville, Ohio, and built stronger what had already been a solid relationship. Same goes from wide receivers coach Kevin Sherman, a former Virginia Tech assistant.
Monteroso leaned on those relationships Friday when placing a phone call to offer a commitment to Purdue and those coaches. Maryland was the other finalist.
"It was mainly Coach Hazell and Coach Sherman," Monteroso said. "I've formed a relationship with them and that's basically what did it for me. It's just the way we interacted and got along real well. I feel like I can further my career with them."
Previous to this turn of events, Monteroso had been committed to Boston College, a program with a head coaching transition in its own right.
Hazell pursued the 6-foot-3, 185-pound prospect even with his commitment intact. Coming out of the official visit to West Lafayette, however, Monteroso de-committed from Boston College and inserted Maryland as another contender. He visited Maryland earlier this week.
"Coach (Randy) Edsall from Maryland was also a great coach too," Monteroso said. "It was tough. And they're both about the same distance from home. But like I said, it was mainly because of Coach Hazell and Coach Sherman."
If not for snow, Monteroso would have made a commitment and began preparation for a basketball game tonight. The game has been postponed. He sits just 15 points shy of scoring 2,000 points during his prep career.
Now Monteroso plans to enjoy being more comfortable with his commitment. There were a few emotions with the news still fresh.
"Relief, I guess," Monteroso said. "But I'm happy. I'm happy I made this decision to continue my career at Purdue."
Once basketball season ends, Monteroso plans to begin training in earnest for the next level. Making an impact early under new leadership is the first priority.
"Like every kid going to play football in college I want to play and I want to play early," Monteroso said. "I want ti go in there and try to perform as a freshman and compete. I've got to go and earn it."
