Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil Review

Nordic Naturals is a green, sustainable company that has been setting the standards for omega excellence since 1995. Nordic Naturals prides itself on producing quality, non toxic, fish oil by sustainable fishing practices.

Nordic Naturals makes products for both humans and pets and for this particular review I was using the Pet Cod Liver Oil For Dogs on Sherman?s food.

I was pretty exciting to do this review because I am always looking for safe ways to supplement the boys to support healthy skin and coat, joint heath and of course heart health.

Besides providing the above mentioned benefits of cod liver oil, it can also help support cellular health, immune system health, brain?development and maintenance, and eye?development?and maintenance.

Traditionally, Norwegians have used cod liver oil for its nourishing and healthful benefits. It is an ideal source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, as well as naturally occurring vitamin A. Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil continues this tradition by providing your dog and cat patients and companions with these same important nutrients.

Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil is derived exclusively from wild Arctic cod (Skrei), from the Norwegian Sea off the Lofoten Islands near Bod?, Norway.

My only concern when trying out the Pet Cod Liver Oil was the amount of Vitamin A that was in the product. Vitamin A is fat soluble vitamin that is stored ?in the fat cells of dogs and too much Vitamin A can lead to?toxicity?and while very rare, may cause bone issues and/or organ damage.

Now, you guys know me and I would never put my dogs in any type of danger, so I talked with the vet and she told me that Vitmain A toxcity is rare and as long as you know the amount of Vitamin?A that you are giving, because it is present in dog food, it would be fine.

I also contacted Nordic Naturals about the Vitamin A in their product and here is what they had to say:

Both cod liver oil and fish body oil are oils derived from fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Cod liver oil is derived specifically from the liver of cod, while fish body is derived from the body of fish. Because the liver is a reservoir of Vitamin A, cod liver oil is higher in Vitamin A content than fish body oil.

The vitamin A concentrations can vary between specific brands of cod liver oil. Some manufacturers will add additional vitamin A to cod liver oil to boost Vitamin A levels. Nordic Naturals does not add additional Vitamin A. The natural vitamin A is acceptable for pets.

Because Vitamin A is fat soluble, it can accumulate in the liver and body and can have harmful effects when supplemented in excessive levels.

Pet owners should be aware of other foods or treats fed to their pets that may also provide high levels of Vitamin A (such as liver), and take all these things into consideration when evaluating the safety of their pet?s diet and additional supplements. This also applies to pet owners feeding their pets raw food diets and home-prepared diets.

Consult your veterinarian to evaluate the total amount of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin A and D your dog/puppy or cat/kitten should receive on a daily basis based on species, age, activity level, diet, life stage (growth/reproduction and adult), and health condition of your pet.

After I determined that the product would be more than safe to give Sherman I started the revew and gave him 1 teaspoon of the Pet Cod Liver Oil on his food every evening for 2 months. Sherman loves fish so I knew that he would really enjoy this, and he did.

While the results were not immediate, over time I did notice that the?flaky?skin that I was seeing on his back began to disappear and his coat, which was lacking in the shine department, began to glisten again.

Another thing that I noticed was his movement up the stairs.

Sherman is 5 and while this is not old for the average dog, it is getting up there for a giant breed dog, and over the winter I noticed him moving a little slower up the stairs. After about 1 month on the Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil , I began to notice a spring in Sherman?s step going up the stairs. He was moving faster and more?fluently. My husband noticed it too.

Now, can I say with 100% certainly that this was due to the cod liver oil?

No.

But I do know that over the 2 months he was on it, I made no changes in his diet.
